Thirteen e-mail tips

Sometimes I sit and scratch my head at the e-mails I receive. Doesn't everyone from time to time? What was that person thinking before they sent that message? Here are some common sense tips for e-mailers:

  1. All attachments (such as photos) to a e-mail should be small. No one likes to have their e-mail program halted waiting for a large attachment to download.
  2. If you're upset with a person, calm down before writing (and worse sending!) a flame mail you will regret later
  3. There is no new car-jacking scheme involving a piece of paper stuck to a car window
  4. Don't write your e-mail IN ALL UPPER CASE.
  5. Applebees is not giving out free gift certificates
  6. Johns Hopkins did not issue a warning about microwave cooking
  7. Respect the privacy of e-mail addresses. If you are sending to a list of people, don't publish all their e-mails to the entire list. Use a mailing list alias or "bcc" so your friend's e-mails don't get published.
  8. PayPal does not need you to verify your security information
  9. Microsoft is not giving away $$ to people who forward e-mail messages
  10. Spelling counts - spell check your e-mail before you send it
  11. Be careful when you reply to an e-mail. Check that you are sending your response to the person you intend it to go to and not an entire group of people.
  12. Create two e-mail accounts. Give one address to your family and friends for personal messages. Use the other one when you need to supply an e-mail online (for example, when ordering things). The second e-mail will act like a SPAM filter.

Interestingly enough, sometimes it is the friends and family member who should only have your spam email address. LOL!

It seems like this should be common knowledge but it isn't. Thanks for sharing!

Some of those spam emails are crazy! I just got another paypal one on yesterday. that and the ones about the lottery! crazy

These are great! I think I'll pass them on to some of my intelligent, yet technically stunted, friends.

I swear, if they send one more of those "if you send this to seven people--plus the person who sent it to you, there will be a little angel that comes out of the email and craps on your shoulder. TRUST ME!" emails, I will kill someone!

Great TT!

I hate emailers who reply to all on things like "what time are you all available to meet." Then I get 15 emails. Argh! reply to sender, people! :)

Great tips! My dsl provider is with yahoo so I'm able to create "disposable" accounts. Love it!

Our email system at work has completely collapsed due to a spam attack. Argh!

This was a really great list. I take it number six was supposed to be a funky way of saying not to send a totally blank email? If so, that was very clever. ;) I've ALWAYS ALWAYS told my friends that if they're going to send out emails to large groups of people that they need to put the addresses in the bcc line. That's the courteous thing to do, since odds are that all the people that you know, don't all know each other. Ta for now dahling!

Do you have any suggestions for how I can stop having e-mails regarding penis enlargement from arriving in my inbox, Divas? I was just curious.

Happy Thursday to you!

Zeus: A simple four word response to those annoying spam mails: I've been neutered. I'm not saying you HAVE been ... but it just may stop those e-mails?

Great list!

Here's one for you: For people who have the word "Specialist" in their job title, their emails may be filtered out by most ISP and company spam filters if they include their job titles in their signature. Why? Because "Cialis" is a sub-string of "Specialist" and "Cialis" is one of the top words used by spammers.

I keep getting one from "my dad is a prince in another country" and I want to trust YOU with our money to transfer the funds..etc.. what an idiot! I hope people don't fall for that.

Don't ever click on the link "Remove me from this mailing list". It just tells the spammer that it's a legit addy. Another is when you do forward a message, make sure you've edited out everyone else's email address in the body of the message.

Great list.

Have a Happy!
